1. RE: The first time I heard Theodore...

As a college student in Chicago around 1990, I had never heard of Bikel, but, when flipping through a used record store bin, the vivid ultraviolet cover of A New Day grabbed me. Seeing it had covers of songs by Donovan, Joni Mitchell, Jacques Brel, and the Beatles, I picked it up immediately. Still have it today. John Mendelsohn's jacket notes conclude: "Oh, and if you've found A New Day in the exotic folk bin, it can only mean that someone between Reprise and you didn't take the time to listen to the new Bikel." Do you find this valuable? |

I first saw Mr. Bikel in the fun movie "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" as a kid in the '60's. Later my parents had a recording on vinyl of him singing songs from "Fiddler On The Roof" and playing Israeli fold songs and the whole family enjoyed this record. To me he is to 20th century Jewish music what Hank Greenberg was to baseball, a big strong presence that makes everyone proud.
